Formaldehyde in baby clothes

Formaldehyde in baby clothes

You may have heard that formaldehyde is dangerous and even that it is best to avoid formaldehyde in the baby clothes and baby products you buy for your little ones. Knowing what it is will make you understand why. Formaldehyde is a colourless, flammable, extremely noxious and toxic chemical that was first discovered in 1859. Due to its versatility, it’s become a common chemical ingredient since its discovery and is used to make different types of plastics, pesticides and industrial disinfectants among other things. Despite some individuals experiencing various short-term effects when exposed to formaldehyde, the reality is that formaldehyde is around us, day-in, day-out. I’m not sure about you but that paints a mental picture for me that I’m not entirely comfortable with. Little…

Breathable fabrics for summertime

summer time breathable fabrics

During the summer months it’s important to dress our little ones in breathable fabrics because your baby’s skin is very delicate. Babies’ skin loses moisture faster than adult skin, making it more vulnerable to dryness and eczema. Chemicals in baby clothes

chemicals in baby clothes

A few months ago well known brands such as Myer’s children’s label Milkshake, Target and Rivers had to recall clothing due to a toxic dye containing carcinogenic chemicals. This particular dye is banned in Europe and as of the 1st of June will be classified as a dangerous poison in the same category as cyanide, strychnine and arsenic. Target, Myer and Just Jeans are just some of the shops that have recalled clothing and bedding containing the hazardous azo dye as it contains carcinogenic chemicals, which can break down to form substances known as “aromatic amines”, according to the ACCC. This can then transfer to the skin and be hazardous to human health and “the associated cancer risks give cause for concern”, the ACCC said. Azo…
